5 mistakes to avoid when managing a beauty salon or hairdressing salon in 2019

What are the 5 mistakes to avoid when managing a hair salon?

Managing employees is never easy, especially when you are not prepared for it. Managing a team well takes time and it is important to train yourself to avoid basic mistakes.

In this article we detail the 5 common mistakes that are to be avoided when taking charge of the team in a hair salon or beauty salon.

1 - Not knowing how to give feedback or praise to your staff

This may seem obvious on paper, but still many managers do not take the time, or the trouble, to praise an employee when he or she does a good job. Or, conversely, reframe it when the employee makes mistakes.

But beware, in either case, it is the way of doing it that is paramount. First of all, when your employee is not satisfied or has made a mistake, take the time to examine the situation and don't punish him or her too quickly. Sanctioning should be a last resort. Is it a one-time mistake (for example, he arrived late once), or is it regular (he is late all the time)?

In the first case, point out to him to make him aware of the problems that this causes in the living room, but be indulgent. However, in the second case, it is important to take the time to discuss it further with him. A constructive discussion will probably allow you to identify the real source of the problem and thus accompany him and allow him to progress.

In the second case, when you are satisfied with an employee, it is also important to say so. It can be a simple "kudos for it" in the course of another discussion. While it may be pleasing, it will only have a relative impact. Sometimes it is important to back up your congratulations.

You can take the time at the end of the day, for example, to have a longer one-on-one discussion with your employee and congratulate him or her again. For an even greater impact, you can also congratulate him in front of all the employees at your salon, during a daily or weekly briefing.

Valuing a collaborator in public is the assurance that he feels recognized in his work and he will always give himself more to be congratulated again in front of the whole show.

However, be careful not to abuse this recognition. It could lose its value over time.

2 - Not listening to one's collaborators

As mentioned in the previous tip, rather than blaming, try to have a constructive discussion with your employee first.

However, to be able to have this type of discussion, you must establish a climate of trust and mutual respect with your collaborators.

Ask to see him alone and in a quiet place to show him that he has your full attention , so he will confide in you and this will allow you to better apprehend the situation. Family or other problems can quickly affect your employee's productivity.

In this case try to be understanding and show empathy . Without becoming the psychologist of his establishment, the manager must take into account the "moods" of his employees.

Whether for professional reasons (salary, quarrels, etc.) or even personal reasons, if an employee comes to see you, don't slam the door in his face.

A visit to a beauty salon or hairdressing salon should be a moment of well-being, if one or more members of your team are not feeling well, the customer will feel it 😥.

If there is no valid reason to excuse your employee's behaviour, then refer to paragraph number 1 and read on to find out what could help the situation!

3 - Neglecting meetings and debriefings

Are you sure that you are organising enough meetings and one-on-one discussions with your employees?

Indeed,3 out of 4 managers consider meetings to be a waste of time . On the other hand, meetings are a very good way to take stock of past weeks' performance and set new objectives for the week ahead.

We often associate meetings with long and unnecessary times, so be aware that a meeting doesn't have to be long . It must be succinct, efficient and short!

Otherwise, you lose the attention of your employees and that is of no interest. You can organise a daily debriefing with all your employees right after closing time to find out how their day went. This can only last 3 minutes, but 3 minutes is enough to discover a problem that needs to be solved.

Then the ideal is to organize a weekly meeting, ideally at the beginning of the week , with your collaborators to take stock of the situation. You can also use these points to challenge your employees. Once or twice a month, challenge them! For example, a contest on resale products. The best salesperson of the week will win a surprise. This will break the routine and their competitive spirit will pull the show up.

Having goals keeps you motivated (of course, with a reward!).

Finally, think about organizing individual interviews with each of your employees, one by one.

This will allow you to congratulate them or, in case of dissatisfaction, to explain and discuss it with them.

In many companies, these interviews are neglected by only doing them once a year ... But in a small structure such as a hairdresser's salon, it is important to hold these meetings every week. This way you can anticipate problems of motivation/dissatisfaction and adjust your management! Indeed the success of your structure depends on your employees, and your job as a manager implies having an eye on everything that happens in your hair salon or beauty salon!

4 - Forgetting about team cohesion

Working in a beauty salon or hairdressing salon can sometimes be repetitive... It is normal that after a while the employees can become bored and therefore less efficient and this is quite normal! It's up to you to challenge your team and push them up. Organize new projects, set up a bonus system.

Pushing them upwards, team members will come to work with pleasure and ambition. On the other hand, take care that the competition does not become unhealthy. It is therefore important to think of a way to maintain cohesion and a good atmosphere between employees. This has a direct impact on the atmosphere in your hairdressing salon or beauty salon! By the way, did you know that organizing team building outside the work environment has many advantages? Team building, or literally 'team building', is a specialised and recognised activity to improve team spirit.

This helps to resolve conflicts, boost everyone's motivation and create relationships of trust: what a benefit! Of course it is an investment, but it allows you to spend a good time with your team. Outside a tightly knit team is an efficient team! There are many activities and companies specialising in the organisation of team buildings, escape games, knitting workshops, wine tasting, blind tests, sports...

You're bound to find something to your liking!

5 - Not knowing how to delegate

Knowing how to recognize one's limits is an essential quality . Yet too many managers still want to manage everything, even when they don't have sufficient know-how. Don't overestimate your abilities and don' t overwork yourself .

A good manager must be able to identify the abilities of each of his employees in order to delegate tasks and to rely on their complementarities . Especially when it comes to communicating in your living room, we know that depending on the generation, people are more or less at ease with social networks.

Out, these tools are indispensable for communication of your salon and allow you to attract new customers . What if you have a social networking enthusiast among your staff who would be happy to participate in the publication of Instagram/ Facebook posts?

Do not hesitate, and entrust him with this task! It will free up your time and delight your collaborator, what could be better? 🥰
