CES 2019: Technological innovations in Hairdressing & Beauty

The intelligent mirror at the heart of group and brand innovations

Gadgets, applications, shops... Groups and brands in the sector highlight their new products.

The American group Procter & Gamble took part in the CES for the first time this year. The cosmetics giant announced the release of its latest online platform Olay Skin Advisor, a tool that detects the age of the user's skin using an algorithm. The tool can show users what their skin would look like in the future, under different scenarios, for example if the user does not use sunscreen when exposed to the sun.

The group's Japanese brand, SK-II, opened a Future X Smart Store store in May 2018 in Tokyo, and later in Shanghai and Singapore. In the store you can find technologies with artificial intelligence. Shoppers can analyze their skin and see the results on an interactive wall.

The L'Oréal group for its La Roche-Posay brand pushes personalization for people with skin problems such as eczema, acne and dry skin. Those affected can track and monitor the pH of their skin in real time thanks to an adhesive strip called My Skin Track pH. L'Oréal's research suggests a link between pH and inflammation, and the group announces that their innovation can read pH in 15 minutes using micro-sensors. My Skin Track pH should be available in dermatology offices throughout the year.

Neutrogena, for its part, has launched a new product called MaskiD, an application that analyzes users' faces and creates customized masks with personalized treatments. The personalized masks are printed in 3D. Each mask has its own unique shape.

CareOS announced the launch of Artemis, the intelligent mirror that connects health, beauty and well-being. More than 50 technological innovations, products and services are integrated into the CareOS platform, such as the Wella Professionals brand of the Coty Group. CareOS and Coty together unveiled the Wella Professionals intelligent mirror. The mirror has the ability to recognize a person's face, search for the history of looks, have people try on different hair colours, offer a 360° angle so that customers can see themselves from all angles, and put the hairdresser/make-up artist in contact via an application.

Potential French start-ups at CES

Artiris launches Compoz, a tailor-made perfume composer that allows its buyer to create the home fragrance he wants with 5 different fragrances among the 25 organic and fair trade essential oils. Compoz can be used via an application and is equipped with a touch screen.

BeautyMix, which was also present at VivaTech, unveils its mixer and accessories that allow the general public to create their cosmetic products at home. Litica Labs creates Beautylitic, an application that allows retailers to analyze the components of their products. Algorithms allow to suggest improvements taking into account consumers' expectations. Generally speaking, augmented reality and artificial intelligence have a real impact on the hair and beauty industry.

Outside the CES 2019 show, the Virtual Nail Salon by Modiface was discovered, which virtually simulates nail polish on users' hands.

YouCam MakeUp has also developed a "Beauty 3.0" application that recommends foundation shades to users, allows them to see live different techniques on their hair and puts them in contact with beauty professionals.

Stay tuned for more news in 2019!
