Why are mobile applications for hairdressing salons false good ideas?

For your hair salon or beauty salon to be sustainable, your digital presence is inevitable. Social networks, such as Facebook and Instagram, websites and online booking are digital services that your customers use every day. They use them not only in your field, but also in the restaurant, travel and health sectors. These digital services are an integral part of our habits today. You are most certainly yourself present on the mentioned platforms, discover why mobile applications for hairdressing and beauty salons should not be part of it.

A few digital figures

The number of people #digital active

Number of people active each day on Facebook: 27 M French Number of people registered on Instagram: 17 M French Number of people with Internet access: 57.29 M French

Time spent on mobile applications

According to the Moderator's Blog, in 2017 the time spent on mobile applications represents 50% of the total time spent on a digital medium, be it a computer, a tablet, or a smartphone. On average, 2.3 hours per day are spent on mobile applications and ⅔ of this time spent on applications are entertainment and communication applications, including social networking applications (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc.), instant messaging (Messenger, Whatsapp, etc.), and music applications (iTunes, Deezer, Spotify, etc.).

You should know thatan application takes 49% of your time spent on mobile applications, between 77% and 80% of our time on 3 applications, and 96% on 10 applications!

Behaviour in the face of push notifications

Android and iOS have 2 different push notification penetration rates. Android has 91.1% of these users receiving push notifications, while 43.9% of iOS users accept to receive them. This is because iOS users must actively consent to receive push notifications, whereas on Android users are opt-in by default and then have to decide to disable notifications.

Receiving push notifications from a mobile application is one thing, being alert and responsive to these notifications is another. 4.9% of iOS users are responsive to push notifications, and 10.7% of Android users are responsive to push notifications.

The possibility to reach customers is therefore very limited, unlike the behaviour in relation to SMS campaigns. It is important to know that 90% of SMS campaigns are read within 10 minutes of receiving the SMS.

The need to choose the right digital channels

These figures reinforce the fact that it is essential to maintain the image of one's hair salon or beauty salon on the Internet. This does not mean that you have to be present everywhere! Each "channel" (platform) has different interests and objectives and not all channels are for your hairdresser or beauty salon at least. As the manager of a business, you already have a lot of work to do. There is no point in wasting time, energy and money on a platform that won't bring you much in return. Find our explanations below.

The average number of downloads of mobile hair salon applications

In the Play Store, under Android, we have selected 20 hair salons and beauty salons. From store, it is possible to see the approximate number of downloads of each application.

For these 20 mobile applications, the number of downloads varies between 5 and 100 per application.

Of the 20 randomly selected applications, there is an average of 47 downloads. The return on investment for producing and maintaining a mobile application is therefore very low. Out of the 47 people who downloaded the application, only 5 people are sensitive to push notifications, and even fewer people use the application on a recurring basis.

Why having a mobile application seems to be the solution?

We are more and more to have a smartphone and to download mobile applications. According to eMarketer, the main applications we use every day are music, social networking, games, video viewing and messaging. We all use applications, some several times a day. So now you're thinking, "Brands have their apps and consumers spend all their time on their smartphone, why can't I?"

Yeah, so why don't you? Especially when other companies offering digital solutions, such as Flexybeauty or LS Coiffure, have in their range of services the creation of a mobile application for your hair salon or beauty salon.

On paper, having an application for your business is a dream come true! But is it really the right solution? Is the price really worth it?

Here's what we think at Wavy...

A mobile application for your hair salon improves your image

When you go to tell your customers that you have a mobile application, the reaction is definitely a "Wow!". Because having a mobile app is a bit of a shock. It's true, at the time your customers will have a modern perception of your living room, but they will quickly realize that having your application doesn't bring them much daily, weekly, or even monthly .

Already have a Facebook page, an Instagram account and a website? All this is more than enough! Your sign appears on 3 different channels, where you can publish your work and that of your collaborators, publish photos of your show, highlight your discounts, your events, and everything that represents your show and that you like!

Don't you think that you are already working and spending enough time on your image via the platforms on which you are present? Wavy also offers a more interesting solution: we publish 1 Facebook post per week on your page!

One application allows you to acquire more customers

That's not true! And if you were thinking of making an application instead of a website, don't do it! The undeniable point: to download your application, you need to know the name of your salon!

Not only do you have to know the name of your salon, but you also have to be a loyal customer who comes very regularly and be sensitive to the purchase of your products.

A person who has never been to your salon will not download your application because they don't know you and have had no involvement with you. First of all, this person will look at your creations on social networks and your website if you have one, then they will call you or book online.

In contrast to a mobile application, a website for your hairdressing salon can be found via Internet search engines, potential customers can find you through keyword queries. This is called search engine optimization. Let's imagine that your salon is called Salon Wavy in Paris 10 :

  • Your customers write in Google: wavy paris 10 exhibition
  • Prospects write : salon coiffure paris 10

In 2 clicks, you have allowed your customers and potential customers to find you in Google, 24/7. A website then allows you to retain your customers, and to win new ones!

What's more, the website at Wavy offers you a responsive design.

Responsive design means that the website adapts to the screen size of the medium on which it is viewed (PC vs Smartphone).

An application for your hairdressing salon allows you to send targeted campaigns

Actually, not really. A mobile application for your hair salon doesn't allow you to retrieve all your customer data. You can target your customers by gender, age, and products sold online. It's already pretty good, but you can do better! With SMS campaigns, you can target your customers on all the information that is in the customer file, that is to say according to :

  • Such as
  • From the last date of arrival
  • From the average basket
  • Of the turnover
  • Number of visits
  • From the anniversary date

And yes, all that! Soon with Wavy, also target according to the services provided and the products purchased. These filters allow you to optimize your communication and have an excellent return on investment.

SMS campaigns allow you to reach your customers instantly and efficiently. Our customers' favourite SMS campaign?

Birthday SMS campaigns! Every month, a birthday wish SMS is sent to your customers. Of course, there is always a discount on services and/or products as a gift.

If you REALLY want a mobile application for your hair salon

We haven't convinced you and you still want a mobile application for your hair salon? Several options are available to you:

  • Option 1: It costs you nothing
  • Option 2: It costs you next to nothing

Option 1: Download the website as a mobile application from the Google Chrome or Safari browser

From the Google Chrome (Android) and Safari (iOS) browsers, it is possible to download a website and "transform" it into an application.

What they actually do is turn the web page into an application format in your menu, but when you open the application, your browser opens. Here's how to 'turn' a website into an application on Android:

Download its website in application

Here's how to 'transform' a website into an iOS application:

Download Wavy under iOS

Option 2: Convertify, your hair salon's mobile application for cheap

Convertify is an American company that offers you to create your mobile application for $49... To pay just once! 49$ is about 43€, so it's much less than what you would have to pay each month to a company like Flexybeauty.

They have a $49 offer to create your hair salon's mobile application on iOS, and a $49 offer on Android. We still advise you to create a mobile application for both operating systems, which would cost a total of $198, which is approximately €175 including tax.

Digital communication is essential for the health of your hairdressing salon or beauty institute, but it must be channelled intelligently. At Wavy, we create your website in your image, we publish one Facebook post per week, we create SMS campaigns and we set up online booking! Are you interested? Leave us your details on our form!
