Why does the music in your salon affect the customer experience?

When a customer enters your salon, he or she will be sensitive to your welcome as well as to the decoration or the fragrance. Music is also an element that influences the customer experience. According to a UNEC study, 90% of customers prefer to hear music in hair salons. But as the saying goes, "Tastes and colours are not debatable", everyone has their own taste in music. So how do you choose the right playlist to suit the atmosphere of your salon and your customers?

The impact of music on your salon or beauty salon experience

According to a study conducted by SACEM, when your customers imagine a hairdressing salon without music, 70% of them think that the place would be sadder and less pleasant. On the other hand, 56% say they would come back to a hairdressing salon just for the sound.

Playing music offers several advantages to your hairdressing salon. Indeed, it will allow to mask the ambient noise caused by the hairdryer for example. The music helps to reduce the noise for a more pleasant atmosphere. But be sure to use the right music playlist! Another advantage for hairdressers is that music can create a form of privacy. Your customers like to talk to each other, but without telling the whole salon about their private lives. Music can help to blur this and make the focus more on the musical atmosphere than on the discussion between client and hairdresser.

For hairdressers and beauty salons alike, music helps to reduce the impression of waiting. Cognitive science research seems to show that music impacts our perception of time, which seems to pass more quickly with music.

In general, music can create a friendly or relaxing atmosphere that enhances or reinforces the positive image of your salon. For many French people, going to the hairdresser or a beauty salon is a real moment of pleasure and relaxation. Offering a tailor-made service in a pleasant atmosphere is essential for the well-being of your customers and to build loyalty.

How to define your playlist?

To choose the right music for your hair salon or beauty salon, we suggest you think about 3 important elements.

What is the world of your salon? For example, in a vintage, 60's style barbershop, your clients are more likely to hear rock'n roll music. The same goes for a US-style barbershop, where hip-hop sounds would be appropriate.

What type of establishment are you? It is obvious that in the case of a traditional spa, for example, a soft and relaxing playlist is more likely to be imagined for your clients. With the music accompanying your service, they will immediately feel soothed and relaxed.

Who are your customers? If you have a young clientele, we recommend that you choose a playlist with music that they are used to listening to and that is in vogue.

Nowadays, you don't have to download music one by one to your computer or use CDs to make a playlist. Thanks to the many platforms that exist, it is now possible to create playlists and modify them.

Some information on legality

Still according to the SACEM study, ¾ of the people surveyed prefer the broadcasting of known music rather than royalty-free music.

Even though radio is very popular, their advertisements with various promos can break the quiet atmosphere you want to create.

Playing music in a public place such as a hairdresser's salon requires paying Sacem (Société des Auteurs Compositeurs et Editeurs de Musique) every year. This is a private organisation that controls and collects the rights of authors, composers and music publishers who are members. It is imperative to take into account that this is a cost that is added to the other expenses of the show.

If you want to broadcast music legally without paying royalties to the Sacem, choose music that is free of rights or in the public domain.

There are several Internet radio companies that allow you to legally broadcast music in your hairdressing salon thanks to royalty-free music playlists. These broadcasting platforms only list artists and composers who are not registered with the Sacem.

Music in the public domain refers only to music that is more than 70 years old. This can be classical music, jazz or old artists. Of course, it is preferable that this type of music fits perfectly with the spirit of your salon and your customers.
