Top 10 original ideas to make your clients wait in your hairdressing salon

People magazines on the coffee table in the waiting area of your hairdressing salon will remain an entertaining read for your customers. Nevertheless, it' s time to offer something new to your customers, many of whom are now using their smartphones rather than opening the pages of a magazine.

Did you know that in 2018, the time spent on social networks in France is 1h20 per day? And that in general, the time spent on applications is almost 2h20? Here's an opportunity for you to use digital as a way to spend your time waiting for appointments!

Discover the Top 10 original ideas to make your customers wait in your hairdressing salon or beauty salon.

Before getting to the heart of the matter, it is important to remind your customers of the basic "rules" to make them feel comfortable in the waiting area of your salon.

First, greet the customer, take their jacket, and invite them to sit comfortably in one of the seats or sofas.

Second, offer him something to drink. Does he want water, coffee, or tea? It doesn't cost much and it's a thoughtful gesture that helps build customer loyalty.

Thirdly, try to make this waiting area as warm as possible!

1. Encourage your customers to visit your salon's social networks.

Propose to your customers to visit your Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, or other accounts, simply by putting a nice sign on your coffee table. It's not a question of printing a blank A4 sheet of paper with the names of your various accounts, but of making the effort to spend a little bit of money at the printer.

Choose to make a sign in your image, with your logo if you have one, in the colors of your living room, with a photo of the team. We advise you to write a small sentence like "Follow us" to incite customers to action, and don't forget to thank them.

The advantage: print this sign only once, that's more than enough. The cost of this sign is only a few euros.

Propose to your customers to follow you on your social networks

Once this sign is printed, put it in a place that is visible from all the seats in your waiting area, such as the coffee table, or on a shelf.

Instead of scrolling through their news feeds mechanically, while waiting for their appointment, your clients discover your latest achievements, you earn new "Likes" on your Facebook page or new followers on your Instagram account.

For this to work, you must of course be active on your social networks.

There are even counters of likes and followers on your social networks. For example the brand Smiilr is a company that offers this type of counter. The counter is connected to your Facebook page or your Instagram account (there are 2 different counters for each social network). We suggest you to discover their products on their website. Smiilr also offers a counter customizable with your logo.

Display your creations on a TV or create a photo album

If you're not really active on social networks, but still have photos of your creations, use them! These photos are assets for the image and notoriety of your hair salon, they are proof of your know-how and it is a shame to keep them in your phone, without making any use of them.

Aren't you taking pictures? We strongly advise you to get started! Value yourself, enhance your know-how, and highlight the transformations made on your clients!

If you can afford to buy a television for your hair salon or beauty salon, put your work on the television. All you have to do is transfer your photos to a USB stick, which you can then put on your TV.

If you cannot afford to buy a television, we advise you to make a photo album and classify your creations by theme (colours, shaded hair, tie and die, buns, braids, etc.). During their waiting time, your customers will be able to see your different services, which may help them in the choice of their new haircut.

You are of course there to guide your customers and help them in their choice during the diagnosis, however seeing the cuts and hairstyles you have done on different types of faces can help them make the right choice.

What's more, instead of showing you cuts they found on social networks like Pinterest or Instagram, or on magazines, they show you cuts that YOU have made. This way, you can give them more advice on services that you have done yourself.

Little advice: if you are not yet on social networks, we strongly suggest you consider them. Facebook, Instagram, Google my Business, your website, ... A photo can reach tens and hundreds of potential customers, so take advantage of the digital age!

Ask a riddle and offer a sample

Ask your customers the question of the day (or week)! Write a riddle on a chalkboard. If your customer finds the answer to the riddle, then you give them a sample of a product. Inform your customers of the reward directly on the board, a reward is a source of motivation.

Ideally, the question has something to do with hairdressing, with your salon, or with your employees. The question is of course more "right" if the answer is not found on the Internet (too easy otherwise!). Here is an example of a question:

Ask your salon's customers to take a quiz.

To stay in the spirit of the riddle, just go a little further... The quiz!

You can put the quiz on the television, between the presentation of different services and/or products. The principle is the same as the riddle: offer a sample if the answers to the quiz are right! Television is always a good medium, it captivates people who are patient.

Highlight your salon's resale products

The waiting time is an opportune moment for your customers to have a first knowledge of the product. There are several possibilities to highlight them:

  1. Arrange your products on a shelf, placed next to the seats in the waiting area, so that your customers can see, pick up and touch them.
  2. You can have a nice brochure printed in which you explain for which hair type the product meets the needs, and what the benefits of the product are.
  3. You can make a presentation on the computer and then transfer it to the TV using a USB stick. Feel free to put before/after of the use of the product.

Set up a tablet with photos and games

If you have a small budget to unlock, you can leave an iPad in self-service. In the iPad album, you can create categories and arrange your photos by theme (color, shaded hair, tie and die, buns, braids, etc.).

You can also download games, for young and old, such as solitaire, chess, scrabble, and also trendy games such as Sonic Force, Rayman Adventures, Candy Crush, etc. Smartphone is not synonymous with games on the phone, and people who don't usually play enjoy playing just at that moment of waiting, the time to "kill" time.

Leaving an iPad for dozens of appointments waiting in a day is not hygienic. Make sure you clean the iPad thoroughly at the end of the day, and let your customers know that you clean the iPad every day, leaving a small note on the coffee table. To go even further, you can provide a gel for your customers to clean their hands when they arrive.

Have your hair salon customers wait in a massage chair

The massage seat, who doesn't dream of it? You'd never say "No" to a moment of relaxation on a massage chair! A massage chair is of course an investment, whose loyalty costs you more than other actions. But you can be almost sure that some of your customers will come early, just to enjoy the massage chair in your hairdressing salon for 10 minutes!

The quality massage chairs vary between 1,000 and 2,000 euros, there are some more expensive ones, but chairs in this price range are already very good for your hairdressing salon.

What we suggest is that you go to shops like Boulanger or Darty and try the different massage chairs for your hair salon. The massage chair is like a couch, you don't buy it until you try it. What's more, you'll get a better opinion of the products in terms of value for money.

Inform your customers about interesting outings in the surrounding area.

Whether you are located in a big city, a medium-sized town by the sea or a small town close to the mountains, there are always interesting activities to do in the surrounding area. It is often said that you don't visit your own town or region, which reminds some people that there is no need to go away for a weekend to discover new places! Gather together the unusual places, historic sites, and sports venues in your town or region so that your clients can discover, or remember, what activities to do.

You've done some of these activities? Feel free to give your opinion! In the same way, if you prefer outings to restaurants, bars, exhibitions or other, then make available the addresses that are likely to interest your customers!

Several options are available to you to help your clients discover these places:

  1. Either you are 200% digital, and you put the names of Instagram accounts, Facebook or websites on a sheet (a nice sheet ;) ) so that everyone can look at what they want. Categorize the places (restaurants, bars, museums, etc.) and add a small descriptive sentence.
  2. Either you are rather paper, and you decide to make a small travel notebook, with your opinions on the different places. If you choose this 2nd option, make sure to put your logo if you have one, the name of your sign, your address, and phone number, in case your customers liked your notebook so much that they decide to take it on board! It's up to you to see if you allow this of course, it all depends on the price you decide to put in the production of the notebook.

Create a space dedicated to children

If the size of your living room allows you to do so, consider creating a dedicated area for children. Put games, colouring and tablets at your disposal, you will make happy parents and children! Meanwhile, parents can settle comfortably in your waiting area and start to relax.

Make available a Guestbook

In a pretty book, which you can customize with the colors of your living room, put the photos of your customers and ask them to write a little review next to it!

Whether you have a strong presence on social networks or not, a Guestbook is always pleasant to browse and discover. For your customers in your waiting area to be able to discover the Guestbook, it must of course be visible and easily accessible. There are several sites on which you can buy a Guestbook, such as Cultura, for example, or the site La Pirate for a customizable Guestbook.
