In the event of failure to comply with minimum wages, you may be ordered to pay a reminder of wages and damages to the employee concerned. So remember to keep yourself informed of changes in the collective bargaining agreement for hairdressers. Trust the team Wavy, we will keep you informed on our blog. For your information, the limitation period is 3 years.

Define a hairdresser's salary based on profitability

Now that you are aware of the minimums set by the collective agreement, you can define your employee's salary based on what he or she earns in relation to his or her sales of services (sales of products are not included in this calculation).

According to amendment No. 13 of 20 November 2008 (art. 1), the employer may set a minimum monthly target for each employee. It is calculated as follows:

Agreed or contractual basic salary (which may vary according to the number of hours worked and may be increased by overtime if it exists) multiplied by a minimum recommended coefficient of 3.4.

  • An employee paid 1,538 euros gross per month must achieve a turnover of 1,538*3.4, i.e. €5,229.2 excluding VAT.

If the employee's monthly turnover (including VAT) exceeds this target, you can grant the hairdresser a variable compensation component according to a percentage that you set based on the difference between the target amount and the turnover achieved. Note that the percentage cannot be less than 10%.

  • If the hairdresser's objective is €5,229.20 excluding VAT and the turnover achieved is €6,000 excluding VAT, the difference is €770.8 excluding VAT. If you have defined a 10% premium on the excess, then the premium will be 10%*770.80€ HT = 77.08€ HT.

Namely...

A high-performing employee styles an average of 15 clients per day, over an average of 20 days per month, which represents 300 clients per month. Typically, an employee styling 10 clients per day, or 200 clients per month.

As a salon manager, you will largely determine the salaries of your employees as a result of the pricing of your services. However, this mechanism makes it difficult for employees to achieve the turnover they need to achieve in order to benefit from the premiums.

In France, the average hairdresser's bill is 26 euros including tax. If we take the example of a hairdresser with an average number of services, here is the calculation:

  • 26€ TTC*200 = 5 200€ TTC turnover
  • We remove the 20% VAT = 4 160€ HT.

For a high-performing employee, the turnover is €26 including tax*300 = €7,800 including tax, i.e. €6,240 excluding VAT.

In this case, we can see that only the employee performing up to 300 customers per month gets an overrun bonus of 104€ gross (6,240-5200)*10%. 104€ gross corresponds to 70€ net, i.e. 70/20 days = 3.50€ net bonus per day; for allowing the salon to earn 312€ in the same day (6,240/20).

This is why we advise you to establish a policy of quality and not quantity, by valorizing your services with the consequent tariffs. In addition, you can define to reward your employees with a percentage higher than 10% on the excess. To ensure good management, think about rewarding your best elements in order to motivate them and pull others upwards.
