Pink October: how can you get your salon or institute involved? 🎗️

It's October, and as every year from1st to 31st, numerous actions will be carried out worldwide to raise public awareness of breast cancer, inform people about the importance of early detection and raise funds for research.

These actions can take many forms: walks, runs, fundraisers, conferences, awareness campaigns on social networks, and many other initiatives aimed at educating people about the importance of regular mammograms and self-screening for early detection.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women. That's why it's so important to learn all you can about it, and to adopt preventive behaviors like screening, which can make a real difference and save lives.

Donations made to associations fighting the disease, such as the Ligue contre le cancer (Cancer League), help to :

  • Financing research teams and programs
  • Meeting the needs of patients and their families
  • Contribute to the promotion of their rights
  • Preventing disease

As a hairdressing and beauty professional, what can you do to mobilize?

Donate your hair

Hair donation is an altruistic gesture in which a person chooses to cut and donate their hair to charitable organizations, which then use it to create wigs for people with illnesses or medical conditions that lead to hair loss, such as chemotherapy, alopecia or other medical conditions.

Charities that collect hair usually have specific guidelines regarding the minimum length required for donations. This length varies, but is often at least 20 to 30 centimeters.

It should also be noted that donated hair must be in good condition, clean and not chemically treated. This means that color-treated or chemically-treated hair (straightening, perming, etc.) is generally not accepted. However, some organizations do accept color-treated hair, provided it has not been damaged by over-treatment.

Donation process: to make a hair donation with one of your clients, here's how to proceed:

A big thank you to Emilie who donated 28cm of hair to the Solidhair association.

Hair donation can have a significant impact on the lives of people affected by hair loss due to medical treatments or conditions. Wigs made from natural hair more closely resemble natural hair , offering greater comfort and self-esteem to the wearer.

You can also use your social media channels to share information, inspirational stories, testimonials and tips on breast cancer prevention. Encourage your customers to share their own stories or experiences.

You can make a donation to a breast cancer organization for each customer during the month of Pink October, for example, by donating a sum or a percentage of the cost of their service. Make sure your customers know about this initiative.

‍Organizinga charity event

‍Organizean in-store or online event to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer. You could organize an auction, a virtual charity run, or an online workshop linked to breast cancer awareness, for example.

You can also set up partnerships with local breast cancer associations to organize joint events or mutually promote your actions.

Whatever approach you choose to engage your salon or beauty salon, don't forget to clearly communicate your commitment to Pink October and the fight against breast cancer to your customers. The more you involve your customers in these efforts, the more effective and meaningful your awareness-raising will be.
