A look back at the hair & beauty technologies seen at CES 2020 in Las Vegas

Like it or not, the future is connected.

This future, or at least a glimmer of it, was on display at the Consumer Electronics Show 2020 (CES).

CES 2020, which took place in Las Vegas from 7 to 10 January, showcased the latest and greatest in technological innovation. Companies and innovators from around the world were on hand to showcase their products, developed through inventive technologies, that will change the consumer experience.

As always, beauty was well represented.

The CES marks the beginning of the technological year: it is a gigantic show where the biggest names in electronics (Amazon, Samsung, Apple...) converge in Las Vegas to unveil the technologies that will dominate our lives over the next decade.

What are the technological innovations in hair & beauty seen at CES 2020?

Wavy was interested in all these innovations and especially those that will impact the beauty industry in the near future. Here's a summary of them for you!

Venus Smart Mirror by ICON.AI

ICON.AI is unveiling its Venus smart mirror at CES 2020. It is an all-in-one multi-function smart makeup mirror with a 7-inch touchscreen LCD display, which provides skin diagnosis and augmented reality makeup functions.

Described as the world's first multi-functional mirror powered by artificial intelligence (AI), with a built-in "Alexa" smart speaker,

The user-centric design offers an easy-to-use interface, discreet elegance thanks to its LED light rings and the integration of artificial intelligence.

Venus smart mirror

With its elegant and minimalist shape, the intelligent make-up mirror offers several advantages:

  • A touch screen with an integrated "Alexa" smart speaker
  • A skin diagnosis, which offers users tips and advice
  • An augmented reality (AR) make-up function which means that make-up can be tried on without applying it.

But that's not all, the mirror also serves as a bedside lamp when not in use as a mirror, or as a LED light ring for applying make-up.

Personal by L'Oréal

L'Oréal takes beauty technology to a new level at CES 2020 with the introduction of Perso: a unique device.

Perso is an AI technology that represents the pinnacle of beauty customization.

Developed by L'Oréal Technology Incubator, Perso can mix lipsticks or personalized care products according to your needs. You load Perso with cartridges that contain either lipstick colours or various skin care ingredients (moisturizer, serums or SPF).

With a cartridge system, Perso creates personalized care formulas in four steps:

Step 1: Skin analysis

The user opens the Perso mobile application and takes a picture with his smartphone. Using L'Oréal's proprietary ModiFace technology, the application uses AI to analyze the user's overall skin condition, including deep wrinkles, fine lines, the appearance of brown spots and pore visibility.

Step 2: Environmental Assessment

Using geolocation data, Perso assesses local environmental conditions that can influence the user's skin condition, including weather, temperature, pollen, UV index and humidity.

Step 3: Personal Preferences

The user then enters his or her personal care issues into the Personal application, including fine lines, brown spots, pigmentation, etc.

Users can also enter their preferred texture and moisture level to further personalize their unique formula of moisturizer, serum and eye cream.

Step 4: Customized formulation and distribution

This collective data allows the creation of a personalized high-performance skin care product. This care is dispensed at the top of the device in a single dose, the quantity of which is perfectly calculated for easy and clean application.

Development is currently focused on skin care, but the device will be able to create a custom foundation and lipstick using real-time trend and colour matching technology.

For lipstick, you can create a shade that matches a dress or the latest trend on Instagram. For skin care, you can create a moisturizer that has more SPF on days when the UV index is high, or more moisturizing ingredients when humidity drops.

Unfortunately, you'll probably have to wait until 2021 to get your hands on this one.

Lumini by Lululab

Lumini is a "Beauty & Lifestyle Assistant". In other words, it is a personalised care solution using artificial intelligence (AI). Concretely, it will scan the user's skin in 10 seconds, analyze it and recommend the right cosmetic products to use according to the user's skin type.

Lumini was developed by Lululab, a start-up financed by Samsung Electronics.

The 3D face mask printing system by Amorepacific

South Korean cosmetics giant Amorepacific presented the mask pack by 3D printing. It won the CES Innovation Award in the 3D printing category.

Amorepacific's 3D face mask printing system uses an application that measures the dimensions of the face and prints a custom hydrogel mask while meeting individual facial characteristics. The technology will be available in the brand's flagship store in Seoul from April 2020.

French start-ups continue to develop hair and beauty technologies at CES 2020

French start-ups and companies are not outdone when it comes to beauty innovation. They too have presented products that could revolutionize our daily lives.

Poseidon: the intelligent mirror from CareOS

After Artemis, which we presented in our CES 2019 article, CareOS presents Poseidon, the intelligent mirror that gives beauty advice.

The latter offers practical benefits that enhance daily well-being, including: a tracking of skin details with 360 ° viewing, a zoom on facial details invisible to the naked eye, a display of tutorials for the beauty routine (from posture to makeup application) .

The next BIC thing: BIC x Invoxia

French start-up Invoxia unveils a brand new shaver, developed by BIC and powered by artificial intelligence, at CES 2020. It is obviously the first mechanical shaver with some form of artificial intelligence.

The prototype 'The next BIC thing' developed by BIC and Invoxia is responsible for analyzing the different movements related to shaving, estimating rinse time or water consumption, measuring temperature and ambient humidity, visualizing the state of the blade, counting the number of passes... and transferring all this to a mobile application, which will be available on Android and iOS.

the next bic thing

As you've discovered, beauty companies want to prove their technological prowess and be at the forefront of the next digital or technological shift with the ambition to revolutionize our daily lives.
