How can you make your salon or institute more responsible?

We all have a role to play in the ecological transition, and you too, as hair and beauty professionals, can adopt practices that will make your business more responsible.

In recent years, as ecological issues have taken on ever greater importance, a large proportion of the population has begun to take responsibility and change their habits in terms of consuming goods and services.

Your sector is also concerned: according to a study carried out by the BVA institute, 64% of French people say they appreciate eco-responsible hairdressing salons.

In this article, discover the actions, improvements and investments you can implement to make your commitments and those of your customers a reality.‍

1. Reduce your water consumption 💧

In the hairdressing and beauty sector, water is essential to the business. For example, the average hairdresser consumes around 180m3 of water per year.

To reduce your water consumption, opt for a faucet head that reduces water consumption while increasing pressure, making it easier to rinse off shampoo or color.
Installing mixing faucets or water aerators can reduce consumption by 40-60%.

Showerheads Ecoheads - Save up to 50% on water and electricity - Purer, softer water thanks to filter - Increased pressure and wider jet for quick rinsing - Hydromassage pressure

2. Optimize the use of your linen 🧺

Towels, bathrobes... In salons and beauty salons, linen is an integral part of salon life. On average, a hair salon does two loads of laundry a day.

Opt for the Eco program on your washing machine, and you'll save both water and energy. Choose eco-friendly products to clean and wash your living room (you can even make your own, simply using soap shavings, a little white vinegar and essential oils!)

And above all, try to reduce your linen consumption, for example by not using a bathrobe for short blow-drying.

3. Recycle your waste ♻️

Hair salons generate around 15 tonnes of waste a year. Recycling waste is a very important part of your salon's environmental impact.

Avoid plastic waste (cups, bottles, etc.). You can set up a water fountain in your living room to encourage the use of water bottles!

Sort your waste (hair color tubes, perms and aerosols) and take it to the waste collection center.

Offer your customers the option of receiving an electronic receipt instead of a sales slip.

Choose large-capacity, refillable, bulk or concentrated products.

Recycle hair scraps. You can either opt for a hair tray supplied by a third-party company (e.g. Capillum, Coiffeurs Justes). The hair will be reused in a variety of ways: as thermal and acoustic insulation, as a barrier against hydrocarbons, as a wastewater filter.

Pink October: every October marks the start of the worldwide awareness campaign to combat breast cancer. Don't forget to offer your customers who want to cut their hair to donate it to associations that will reuse it to make natural hair wigs for patients . For more information, see the blog article on Pink October.

This year Émilie from the Wavy by Treatwell team donated 28cm of hair to the Solidhair association.

 4. Encourage upcycling 🛋️

As trendy as it is responsible, upcycling means reusing second-hand furniture or objects to give them a second life rather than buying new.

So give preference to second-hand decor and furniture in your living room.

This will enable you to stand out from the crowd with an original approach, a unique and personalized decoration that will leave a lasting impression.

6. Change your consumables purchasing habits 🛍️

Here are some simple changes you can make You can make changes to your consumables purchasing habits to make your salon more responsible:

Turn your cotton towels into bamboo fiber towels for a more pleasant feel and ecological impact, replace your plastic bags with recyclable paper or cardboard bags, opt for organic cotton cloths instead of paper towels and use washable, reusable wipes instead of disposable cotton pads.

Encourage your employees to invest in water bottles with the show logo (it's also a nice touch).

You can provide your employees with branded water bottles to reduce the use of plastic bottles.

7. For purer air, green your living room 🪴

Certain plants have the ability to filter out "pollutants " (such as benzene and ammonia, which are very present in the products used by hairdressers), thereby purifying the air in your salon .

You can choose from our non-exhaustive list of "depolluting" plants:

  • Anthurium: excellent for absorbing large quantities of ammonia
  • Sansevieria : effective in absorbing benzene
  • Aloe: absorbs most pollutants and electromagnetic waves
  • Ivy: also absorbs ammonia

Bonus: landscaping a green space can quickly become an Instagrammable spot for before-and-after photos or videos, enough to attract fans of this type of content!
